Introduction:
I am a board-certified family doctor with 25 years of practice
experience and I believe you can learn to enjoy life while
improving your health.

I call this concept PRO-vention and it is the basis of my book: “ HEALTH YOURSELF: THE CANDY, BOOZE, AND SEX PRESCRIPTION” In this newsletter I will provide you with information, products, and services that can add pleasure and enjoyment to your life and improve your health as well.

The book, website, and newsletter are organized into three sections: PANTRY PREVENTION that features information on how foods can be not only enjoyable but healthy as well. The PLEASURABLE PURSUITS section tells you how to spend your time doing things that add zing to your life and improve your health and help you live a longer and happier life. In POSITIVE PASSIONS you will find out how to harness the power of your emotions and attitudes to positively impact your life and health. To order your copy of “Health Yourself: The Candy Booze and Sex Prescription” visit the website www.healthyourselves.com

In this Issue:
1.Pantry Prevention: Coffee: Good, Bad, or Ugly? Vitamin D Prevents Falls in Elderly / Pie Time
2.. Pleasurable Pursuits: Train to prevent brain drain.
3.Positive Passions: Kneel and heal.

1.PANTRY PREVENTION Coffee: Good, Bad or Ugly?

Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed “"drug"” thanks to its effects of increasing alertness, producing a mild “"buzz"”, and boosting physical endurance. Like all drugs, caffeine has positive as well as negative effects. Other factors on the plus side include a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease and gallstones and it enhances the effects of the over the counter pain killer ibuprofen. Caffeine has a downside too. Sipping java can raise blood pressure, elevate cholesterol, and regularly drinking coffee served hotter than 157 degrees could increase your risk of cancer of the esophagus. Coffee houses and restaurants usually serve their beverages between 170-190 degrees.

Vitamin D: Senior citizens who take regular vitamin D supplements can reduce the risk of falling by 49%. Swiss researchers found that taking vitamin D improved the function and strength of bones and muscles. The best results occurred in the group that took 1200 mg. Of calcium along with 800 IU of vitamin D.

Pie Time: Serve up a slice of your favorite pie and improve your health according to a report in the January 2002 issue of Men’s Health . Lemon meringue pie has 562 calories per slice but contains the memory-improving chemical choline and the antioxidants found in lemons protect against infection and slow down the aging process.

Blueberry Pie clocks in at 473 calories per slice and contains flavinoids – chemicals that may improve vision, balance, coordination, and short-term memory.

The Southern favorite (and my favorite!) Pecan Pie is loaded with 757 calories and 60 grams of fat per slice but the good news is that almost 90% of the fat comes from the pecans and is the preferred unsaturated type of fat that can lower our levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise your good cholesterol (HDL).

“"Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will
sooner or later have to find time for illness."”

2.PLEASURABLE PURSUITS:

Train to Prevent Brain Drain Recent research shows that regular physical activity can protect against declining brain function-especially in older women. Those who exercised three or more times a week at an intensity greater than walking reduced the risk for brain impairment by 50% and reduced the risk for Alzheimer’s by 70%. Walking and physical activity are an enjoyable way to relax and also cheap insurance and prevention!

3. POSITIVE PASSIONS:

Kneel and heal According to Dr. Harold Koenig a Duke University psychiatrist and senior author of The Handbook of Religion and Health traditional religious beliefs have a variety of effects on personal health. (Reported in The Saturday Evening Post Nov./Dec. 2001). Dr. Koenig found that religious people tend to lead healthier lives: they are less likely to smoke, drink, or drive while drinking and people who pray tend to have less overall illness. Hospitalized people who never attended church had a hospital stay 3 times longer than those who attended regular worship services. Heart patients were 14 times more likely to die following surgery if they did not participate in religious activity.
