PANTRY PREVENTION:
Heart Protection: Sounds Fishy to me!
For patients who already have heart disease, eating three ounces of
fatty fish a day offers
protection against further heart problems. Salmon, herring, trout,
and sardines contain high levels of the beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids.
Leaner fish such as canned tuna, halibut, and flounder require larger
portions to supply the necessary levels of fish oils.
The American Heart Association now endorses
taking fish oil supplements as an alternative. Taking three 1
-gram fish oil capsules a day provides the recommended levels. For
patients without heart disease experts recommend at least two servings
of fish a week. Other protective foods include oils from soybeans,
canola, and flaxseed, all of which contain high levels of alpha-
linoleic acid. (Circulation 106 [21]:2747-57,2002)

Pleasurable Pursuits:
Libido Lifter for Ladies
Increased sexual desire and overall sexual satisfaction for women were
reported in a study of a patent-pending nutritional supplement
containing L-arginine ginseng, gingko, damiana, and 14 other vitamins
and minerals. Women taking the supplement Arginmax (Daily Wellness
Company), experienced a higher level of \ increased sexual desire and
overall satisfaction with sex life compared to women who received
placebo.
Women in the 39-57 year age range
experienced the most benefit. 73% reported more satisfaction with their
sexual relationship and 91% reported an increase in frequency of
their sexual intercourse compared to 40% and 20% in the placebo group.
No adverse effects occurred in women using the supplement. (Presented at
the 9th Annual Congress on Women's Health) To view the original article

Looking for Love Japanese Style
Because of a declining birth rate, the Japanese government is budgeting
3.1 billion yen a year on match-making activities such as singles
parties, boat cruises, and hiking trips.
Maybe Uncle Sam could institute this as an example of (com)passionate
conservatism. Reported in FP News Jan.15, 2003

Positive Passions:
"What's God Got to Do With It?"
A survey of 92,000 Maryland residents revealed that church attendance
significantly coincided with lower levels of disease and death. Those
attending church weekly died 50% less often from heart disease,
emphysema, and suicide and 74% less often from cirrhosis.
A study of older heart patients revealed
that the degree of strength they received from their religious faiths
was the most consistent predictor of survival following elective heart
surgery.
