PANTRY PREVENTION:
Healthy Fats for Weight Loss
Nutrition experts recommend eating more fat in order to improve your
chances of losing weight. A recent study published in The International
Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders compared a standard
low-fat diet to a moderate-fat Mediterranean diet containing fats from
foods like olive oil and nuts. The two diets included the same number of
calories. The moderate-fat group lost weight and waist size while the
low fat group gained over six pounds. Researchers concluded that a
moderate-fat diet is more satisfying, allowing participants to “stick to
the program with greater success.” Remember: to lose weight you must
burn up more calories than you take in. Substituting healthy fats from
nuts, olive oil and canola oil for processed foods and snacks may make
it easier to lose weight.
(Reported in Running and Fit News,
Nov/Dec.2002)
A Fishy Way to Prevent a Stroke
Research results suggest that eating fish once a month reduces the risk
of stroke in men. A twelve year long study from the Harvard School of
Public health showed that men who ate fish one to three times a week had
fewer strokes of the ischemic (dry) type. More is not necessarily better
as there was no further risk reduction with a higher frequency of fish
intake.

Association Dec.25, 2002)

Pleasurable Pursuits: Sex:
Making Love and Making Health
According to an article appearing in the AARP magazine, “People who have
more sex look more youthful …have less pain and…produce higher levels of
a substance that helps battle colds and stomach bugs.”
(Reported in an article by Jane Glenn Haas of the Orange County Register
published in the Houston Post Jan.10, 2003)

Positive Passions:
Get an Attitude and Live Longer
“New research suggests that those who live to be 100 are less likely to
dwell on problems and have a better ability to handle stress than those
who die younger.” “…psychological health is more important than
physical health in
maintaining well-being late in life”, according to experts in Boston who
studied the factors that contribute to longevity. Those who live to one
hundred years or more tend to be “funny and gregarious” and are “able to
build the kind of social networks that are important to cognitive
vitality” says Dr. Thomas Perls who headed the study. (From an
article by Alice Dembner of the Boston Globe published in the Houston
Chronicle Dec. 8, 2002)
