In this Issue:
Laugh of the Month: “I’ve been reading so much about the bad effects of smoking, drinking, eating, and sex I finally decided to give up reading.”
2. Simon and Garfunkle Your Way to Health: Parsley sage, rosemary, and thyme is not just a song from the 60’s. USDA researcher Dr. S.Y. Wang analyzed 30 common herbs and found they are richer in antioxidants than many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are chemical compounds that have many positive effects in the body. The most potent herb is oregano with 20 times the antioxidant level of most other herbs. Other rich sources are dill, rosemary, thyme, and peppermint. (Runner’s World June 2002) 3. Age Gingerly: New research shows that ginger can help reduce the pain of osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis). Subjects who consumed 255 milligrams of ginger twice a day reported higher levels of pain relief than those who did not take ginger.
BONUS TIP #2: People who walk more than 2
hours per week make 50% fewer emergency room visits and are less likely
to be hospitalized. Run Away From Cancer
Quote of the month: “ Fear less, hope more; eat less, chew more, whine
less, breathe more, talk less, say more; love more, and all good things
will be yours.”
European researchers featured in the British Medical Journal found that
reciting prayers or mantras slows down breathing and improves heart
health. Music Power: Sounds, tunes, and harmonies do more than nourish and mend the soul according to an article in Common Boundary (July 1998). Music produced deep relaxation and positive feelings that can help treat physical illness and depression. Sound and music can “encourage, support, and create harmony and balance” according to the author. The article also tells us there will come a time when patients will get a prescription for a piece of music instead of a pill. Don Campbell, author of “The Mozart Effect predicts doctors may someday say “Take a big dose of C-sharp and call me in the morning.” Campbell says “music is on the forefront of use in rehabilitation, stress reduction, strokes, high blood pressure, and the release of emotional complexes. Stay tuned for further developments.
