PANTRY PREVENTION
Feeling Your Oats:

Eating whole oat cereals daily lowered the need for blood pressure medication and improved overall control of blood pressure for patients with hypertension in a 12 week study from the University of Minnesota. Researchers also found that eating these cereals improved cholesterol and glucose levels.Increasing intake of whole oat cereals rich in soluble fiber appears to lower your overall risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

LIKE A ROLLING(KIDNEY) STONE
If you are one of the 10% of the US population who experiences a kidney stone your doctor may have prescribed a low calcium diet to lower your 50% risk of developing another stone in the
next 10 years. Recent research indicates that the low calcium approach may not be the best one. According to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a low-protein, low sodium, HIGH CALCIUM diet reduces the risk of repeat stones in men with high levels of calcium in their urine.

HIGH TEA
In previous issues we discussed the health benefits of green tea such as protection against cancer and heart disease. Most of these beneficial effects are due to the high level of anti-oxidants found in green tea. According to
researchers the level of antioxidants is not equal in the common brands of tea.The four brands that rated on top:

CELESTIAL SEASONINGS GREEN TEA
LIPTON GREEN TEA
BIGELOW DARJEELING BLEND
UNCLE LEE'S GREEN TEA.

"Health is the thing that makes you feel that NOW is the
best time of the year."-Franklin P. Adams

PLEASURABLE PURSUITS
WINE IQ
According to a prominent medical journal, wine drinkers are more intelligent than beer drinkers or abstainers.Wine drinkers had higher IQ scores than beer drinkers or tee-totallers and also had higher scores on social status and personality.

LATE BLOOMERS AND BOOZE
If you are middle aged or older you may not want to take up drinking wine to boost your IQ or protect you against heart disease..British researchers reporting in the medical journal HEART found that those who began drinking after age 40 did not experience the health benefits of alcohol and in fact were more likely than regular drinkers to die from causes other than heart disease.

POSITIVE PASSIONS:
MARRIAGE AS A LIFE SAVER
A good strong marriage may be good for the heart. Scientists reported in the American Journal of Cardiology that among patients with congestive heart
failure those with healthy marriages had the lowest risk of death.Successful marriages may help patients comply with the challenges of diet , exercise, and medication required to boost their ailing hearts.
