PANTRY PREVENTION
Red wines, long known for their heart healthy benefits, may also help
prevent the common cold. Researchers in Spain found that a glass a day
of red wine lowered the incidence of common colds in their preliminary
studies. The chemical resveratrol found in red wine acts to reduce
inflammation and protect against infection. (Reported in Runners World
2002)
According to researchers, eating almonds and almond oil increases your
good cholesterol and lowers the bad cholesterol, thus reducing the
chances for a heart attack or stroke.
Sex and the Single Serving: The National Cancer Institute reports that
women eat four servings a day of fruits and vegetables while men eat
only three and a half servings a day. Cancer experts say that the extra
partial serving is enough to to make a real difference in decreasing
your chances of getting cancer.

"If we are what we eat, some of us are in
danger of becoming french fries."
Andrew Fitzpatrick

PLEASURABLE PURSUITS:
It's All in the Water
Water based exercise results in significant health gains and protection
against heart attacks for elderly women according to a recent study.
Women who participated in the 12 week study showed increased muscle
strength, an improved cholesterol profile, and improved agility and
movement.

POSITIVE PASSIONS:
The "Write Stuff"
Keeping a journal of your daily activities and challenges can help
reduce stress and anger. Some patients also experience an improvement in
symptoms of some chronic diseases when they journal their feelings. John
Lee's book "Writing from the Body" (St. Martin's Press) is an excellent
resource.

Laugh
of the Month:
Phil Proctor's Prescriptions for Modern Life (From Funny Times)
Flipitor: increases life expectancy by controlling road rage and
diminishing the urge to flip off other drivers.
Empty Nestrogen: eliminates melancholy by enhancing the memoery
of
what a pain in the ass your kids were as teenagers and reminds you why
you couldn't wait for them to move out.
Buyagra: injected prior to shopping, it increases the potency and
duration of the spending spree.

Bonus:
Gingko not kinko
According to Dr. Andrew L. Stoll, taking Gingko Biloba as a supplement
may reverse or diminish the sexual impairment induced by certain
anti-depressants known as SSRI's. 91% of women and 76% of men in the
study reported an improvement in their sexual function when they addded
gingko while taking SSRI's. Gingko can cause bleeding in the higher
doses required to improve sexual function, so consult your doctor before
trying it as a supplement.
