PANTRY PREVENTION
Dr. "Pepper"?
Fresh chili peppers contain more cancer-fighting antioxidants than 30 other vegetables according to a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition. These red-hot chili peppers pack more than four times the amount of antioxidants per gram than tomatoes or even broccoli.(Reported in SELF magazine Aug. 2002).

Calcium: Benefit Beyond Bones
Calcium, the mineral known to build and protect bones also protects against heart disease and colon cancer. Researchers at Harvard University found that 1250 milligrams of calcium per day made patients less likely to develop colon cancer. Women taking more than 1000 milligrams of calcium per day had higher levels of HDL (good cholesterol) after 12 months compared to a placebo group. Higher levels of HDL are associated with lower risk of heart attacks. Yogurt, broccoli, bok choy, kale, and sardines are excellent sources of calcium. (The American Journal of Medicine- reported in HEALTH Magazine- September 2002)

"One cannot think well, sleep well, or love well, if one has not dined well."  Virginia Woolf in: To the Lighthouse

PLEASURABLE PURSUITS
Measure for Measure: Pedometers Rule Walking for exercise can lower your blood pressure, decrease your cholesterol, improve your "good" cholesterol and protect against heart attacks, stroke, and the pain of osteoarthritis. Experts now recommend "10,000 steps per day" to achieve the health benefits of walking. Now you can easily measure your steps by clipping an instrument known as a PEDOMETER to your belt and let it count the number of steps you take each day. Some models of pedometers can also measure distance and calories! To shop on line for a pedometer: www.newbalancecatalog.com  To enroll in a 10,000 steps program: www.healthpartners.com

POSITIVE PASSIONS:

Avoid Mad-Man Disease: Don't Have a Cow Medical students who became angry quickly when under stress were three times more likely than normal to develop heart disease prematurely and five times more likely to have a heart attack than their calmer colleagues. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University tracked these students since 1948 and results suggest that people with a high level of anger or at risk for developing heart disease at an early age compared to their more laid-back counterparts.

Laugh of the Month:
When I asked one of my more affluent patients if she wanted a local anesthetic for his upcoming surgery she replied "
I can afford the best. Get something imported."
